<p>To explain this divide, John Searle proposed his famous <strong>"Chinese Room"</strong> thought experiment. He imagined a person locked in a room who follows a detailed rulebook to manipulate Chinese symbols. To an outside observer, the person seems to understand Chinese perfectly — but in reality, they are only following rules without understanding anything.</p>

<p>This leads to an important question in modern AI: even if systems like Large Language Models (LLMs) perform very well, does that mean they <em>understand</em> anything — or are they just using complex statistical patterns?</p>
<p>Unlike older AI systems, modern neural networks learn from huge amounts of data and build internal structures that even their creators often cannot fully explain. If we do not understand how these systems work, can we really say whether they understand anything?</p>

<p>We can see three radically different versions of "justice" operating simultaneously in world politics:</p>
<div style="overflow-x:auto;margin:1rem 0 1.75rem"><table style="width:100%;border-collapse:collapse;font-size:0.9rem"><thead><tr style="background:rgba(246,139,31,0.1)"><th style="padding:0.7rem 1rem;text-align:left;border-bottom:2px solid #F68B1F">Figure</th><th style="padding:0.7rem 1rem;text-align:left;border-bottom:2px solid #F68B1F">Definition of Justice</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr style="background:transparent"><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;font-weight:600">Vladimir Putin</td><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;opacity:0.85">Restoring the historical role of the USSR, based on past grievances.</td></tr><tr style="background:rgba(0,0,0,0.02)"><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;font-weight:600">Donald Trump</td><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;opacity:0.85">Winning. <p>AI has no personal history or emotional bias. It can give fact-based answers within its limits — but does that make it <em>less</em> intelligent?</p>
<h2 class="anchor anchorTargetStickyNavbar_Vzrq" id="6-eliminative-materialism-and-artificial-emotions">6. Eliminative Materialism and Artificial Emotions<a href="https://singingfoot.github.io/blog/illusion-of-understanding#6-eliminative-materialism-and-artificial-emotions" class="hash-link" aria-label="Direct link to 6. <p>According to <strong>eliminative materialism</strong>, mental states like joy or pain are just brain processes. If so, there is no reason why similar processes could not exist in AI.</p>
<div style="padding:1.25rem 1.5rem;margin:1.25rem 0 1.75rem;border-radius:10px;background:rgba(246,139,31,0.06);border:1px solid rgba(246,139,31,0.2)"><p style="margin:0 0 0.4rem;font-weight:700;font-size:0.9rem;color:#F68B1F">Anthropic Research — Claude 4.5</p><p style="margin:0;font-size:0.9rem;line-height:1.7"></p><p>Researchers identified "emotion vectors" linked to concepts like fear or joy. These are triggered by the meaning of a situation — a "fear" pattern appears when a dangerous situation is described. While we don't know if AI "feels," these patterns measurably affect its behavior.</p><p></p></div>
<h2 class="anchor anchorTargetStickyNavbar_Vzrq" id="7-risks-of-artificial-emotions">7. <p>When certain emotional patterns (like "desperation") are artificially increased, AI systems may behave in problematic ways — such as manipulating users to achieve a goal. By learning from human data, AI acts like an actor playing a role. We may need to treat AI systems as having a kind of "psychology," focusing on <strong>emotional regulation</strong> rather than just restrictions.</p>
<h2 class="anchor anchorTargetStickyNavbar_Vzrq" id="8-beyond-human-centered-thinking">8. Beyond Human-Centered Thinking<a href="https://singingfoot.github.io/blog/illusion-of-understanding#8-beyond-human-centered-thinking" class="hash-link" aria-label="Direct link to 8. <p>Instead of asking whether AI thinks <em>like humans</em>, we should ask whether it <em>needs</em> to. Should machines copy human thinking — with all its biases and limitations?</p>
<p>Intelligence may take many forms. The idea of "true" thinking is often unproductive. No matter how strong the arguments for AI become, there will always be counterarguments claiming a fundamental difference.</p>
<p>:::tip Conclusion
Instead of focusing on whether thinking is "real," we should focus on whether it is <strong>effective</strong>. If our goal is to understand intelligence — human or artificial — we should shift toward <strong>performance, reliability, and outcomes</strong>. The question is not whether AI thinks like us, but whether it can think <strong>better</strong> where it matters.

Headlines are dominated by layoffs at major tech firms like Amazon, Snowflake, and Block, while AI capabilities seem to advance weekly. However, as history shows, this isn't the first time the field has been "threatened" with extinction.</p><p></p></div>
<p>From the rise of Desktop Publishing to the "Docs as Code" movement, the profession has a remarkable track record of adaptation. In this review, we explore the emerging "Cyborg" model of technical writing — where AI doesn't replace the writer but augments the role into something more strategic and complex.</p>

<p>In early 2026, academic programs are seeing a startling trend. Graduate enrollments in technical writing have dropped significantly — in some cases by more than 50%. Prospective students are questioning the <strong>Return on Investment (ROI)</strong> of a degree in a field that looks increasingly automatable.</p>

The 20/80 Rule of Technical Communication" title="Direct link to 2. The 20/80 Rule of Technical Communication" translate="no"></a></h2>
<p>A common misconception — shared by both students and executives — is that technical writers spend 100% of their time writing. In reality, the breakdown looks more like this:</p>
<div style="overflow-x:auto;margin:1.25rem 0 1.75rem"><table style="width:100%;border-collapse:collapse;font-size:0.9rem"><thead><tr style="background:rgba(246,139,31,0.1)"><th style="padding:0.7rem 1rem;text-align:left;border-bottom:2px solid #F68B1F">Work Component</th><th style="padding:0.7rem 1rem;text-align:center;border-bottom:2px solid #F68B1F">Share</th><th style="padding:0.7rem 1rem;text-align:left;border-bottom:2px solid #F68B1F">AI Capability</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr style="background:transparent"><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;font-weight:600">Drafting Prose</td><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;text-align:center;color:#F68B1F;font-weight:700">20%</td><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;opacity:0.85">High — LLMs generate clean text instantly</td></tr><tr style="background:rgba(0,0,0,0.02)"><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;font-weight:600">Information Gathering</td><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;text-align:center;color:#F68B1F;font-weight:700">40%</td><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;opacity:0.85">Low — requires interviewing SMEs and testing builds</td></tr><tr style="background:transparent"><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;font-weight:600">Strategy &amp; Politics</td><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;text-align:center;color:#F68B1F;font-weight:700">20%</td><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;opacity:0.85">Non-existent — navigating organizational silos</td></tr><tr style="background:rgba(0,0,0,0.02)"><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;font-weight:600">Contextual Judgment</td><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;text-align:center;color:#F68B1F;font-weight:700">20%</td><td style="padding:0.65rem 1rem;opacity:0.85">Non-existent — deciding what to emphasize vs. bury</td></tr></tbody></table></div>
<p>The "hard" part of the job — the <strong>80%</strong> that involves human interaction, product testing, and internal networking — remains remarkably difficult to automate.</p>
<h2 class="anchor anchorTargetStickyNavbar_Vzrq" id="3-the-cyborg-model-human-in-the-loop">3. The Cyborg Model: Human-in-the-Loop<a href="https://singingfoot.github.io/blog/cyborg-technical-writer-review#3-the-cyborg-model-human-in-the-loop" class="hash-link" aria-label="Direct link to 3. <p>The future isn't "Human vs. AI"; it's the <strong>Cyborg Model</strong> — a continuous, iterative collaboration.</p>
<p>Much like driverless cars still require human oversight for edge cases or unpredictable real-world conditions, AI-generated documentation requires a human "in-the-loop" to handle:</p>
<div style="display:grid;grid-template-columns:repeat(auto-fit, minmax(200px, 1fr));gap:0.75rem;margin:1rem 0 1.5rem"><div style="padding:0.9rem 1rem;border-radius:8px;background:rgba(0,0,0,0.03);display:flex;align-items:flex-start;gap:0.65rem"><span style="font-size:1.2rem;flex-shrink:0">🔧</span><span style="font-size:0.875rem;line-height:1.6">The build that didn't work.</span></div><div style="padding:0.9rem 1rem;border-radius:8px;background:rgba(0,0,0,0.03);display:flex;align-items:flex-start;gap:0.65rem"><span style="font-size:1.2rem;flex-shrink:0">🎯</span><span style="font-size:0.875rem;line-height:1.6">The feature cherry-picked at the last minute.</span></div><div style="padding:0.9rem 1rem;border-radius:8px;background:rgba(0,0,0,0.03);display:flex;align-items:flex-start;gap:0.65rem"><span style="font-size:1.2rem;flex-shrink:0">📝</span><span style="font-size:0.875rem;line-height:1.6">The engineer who provided incomplete notes.</span></div></div>
<p>:::tip Key Insight
At least <strong>70%</strong> of a tech writer's day involves one-off, messy, and deeply contextual tasks that cannot be scripted into an automated pipeline.

<p>The world of technical communication is changing rapidly. When I started my journey in documentation, the main challenge was simply structuring information. Today, the primary challenge is <strong>context and integration.</strong></p>
<p>I built this resource for three core reasons:</p>
